Tour de France 2027 Route: Edinburgh Grand Départ and the UK Stages

The 2027 Tour de France starts in Edinburgh on Friday 2 July 2027, the first time the race has ever started in Scotland. Three British stages cross Scotland, England and Wales before the Tour heads for France, and the race runs through to 25 July. Only the three UK stages have been announced so far.

The Grand Départ: Edinburgh, Friday 2 July 2027

Scotland has waited a long time for this. Edinburgh hosts the first Scottish Grand Départ in Tour history, and 2027 is bigger than one race: both the men's Tour and the Tour de France Femmes start in Great Britain, six British stages across the two races. The first yellow jersey of 2027 will be pulled on in Britain.

Stage 1: Edinburgh to Carlisle, 184km

Out of the capital, through Midlothian and the Scottish Borders, and south to a finish beside Carlisle's castle. The Côte de Melrose is the only categorised climb on the profile, so on paper this is a sprint day. Opening stages never race like paper: the first yellow jersey of a Tour is worth a fight, and nerves decide as much as legs.

Stage 2: Keswick to Liverpool, 223km

Saturday 3 July. A Lake District start in Keswick, then south via Lancaster and Blackburn to a city centre finish on The Strand in Liverpool. It is sprinter shaped, but 223km is a long day, and if the wind gets into the race on the run south it will not be a procession.

Stage 3: Welshpool to Cardiff, 223km

Sunday 4 July, and the first men's Tour de France stage ever raced in Wales. This is the day the UK leg gets serious: eight categorised climbs, six of them in the final 80km, the Côte de Rhigos late in the stage, and the Côte de Caerffili, 2km at 8.1 per cent, shortly before the finish in Cardiff. Whoever wears yellow into France will have earnt it on British roads.

What we know about the rest

Honestly, not much yet, and we would rather say so than guess. The race finishes on Sunday 25 July 2027. The finish is expected back in Paris, but ASO has not confirmed it, and we will not tell you it is confirmed until it is. Stages 4 to 21 arrive with the October presentation.

How to watch the UK stages in person

Roadside is free, in Scotland, England and Wales alike, and for the UK stages that is genuinely the way to see it: pick a climb or a finish town and soak it in. Where access starts mattering is France, where team zones, start villages and finish line hospitality separate watching the race from being inside it.
