The stage opens through the Basque hills to the Col de Burdincurutcheta, 8.7 km at 9.3% with ramps of 15%, and the Col de Bagargui, 4.8 km at 6.4%. Both are steep enough to split the field early.
Then the Béarn. The Col de Soudet is 15.1 km at 7.2%, long enough to wear down a team, and the Col de Marie Blanque, 7.7 km at 8.6%, is the last launchpad before the descent into Laruns.
Laruns has seen big days. Tadej Pogačar took his first Tour stage win here in 2020, beating Primož Roglič. In 2023 Jai Hindley made his move on the Marie Blanque and won in Laruns to take the yellow jersey. A late attack on the same climb is the obvious play in 2027.
