Why This Stage Matters

Time trials decide Tours, and 2027 has 71 km of them across two stages, the most since 2012. Stage 7 is the first and the longer of the two at 38 km.

It also comes at the right moment. After a week of tension, wind and short climbs, every contender has to show what they have with no team around them and no wheel to follow. By Friday evening the general classification will have a real shape.

The Route

The Race

The course runs from Blois through the woods and vineyards of the Loire, past Cour-Cheverny, before the final three kilometres inside the Chambord estate. It is undulating rather than technical, so it rewards power and pacing more than bike handling.

Expect the specialists to fight for the stage and the overall contenders to fight for seconds. Christian Prudhomme expects this test to establish a definite hierarchy before the mountains, and the gaps on a course like this build steadily, kilometre by kilometre.

Both towns know the format. Blois hosted an individual time trial in 1992 and a team time trial in 2005. That same year a Tour stage started from the forecourt of the château at Chambord, and Robbie McEwen won the sprint at Montargis.

Stuey's Thoughts

“During this ITT, we will find out who the real favourites are.”

During this ITT, we will find out who the real favourites are. Remco's result will be super important, and this will give us a great insight into his GC capabilities. The strong time triallists could establish an important advantage before the first mountain showdown at the Grand Colombier.

Experience This Stage

Be at Chambord for the finish. The riders come in one after another through the afternoon, so you see the whole field rather than a flash of the peloton, and every one of them finishes with the most famous château of the Loire behind them. King François I began building it in 1519, and Leonardo da Vinci is credited with part of the design.

Ride the course the day before. It is 38 km of Loire Valley roads past Cheverny and through the forest, gentle enough to enjoy at your own pace and long enough to understand how hard it is to hold full power for most of an hour.

Key Points

  • Start in Blois, a city with a long time trial history
  • Through the woods and vineyards of the Loire via Cour-Cheverny
  • Final 3 km inside the grounds of the Château de Chambord
