Why This Stage Matters

Sprinters need days like this one. The opening week has been hard on them, from the Welsh valleys to the Cadoudal, and Stage 6 is a clear shot at a stage win and points for the green jersey.

Angers hosts the Tour for the 20th time. It cheered Jacques Anquetil, sent Eddy Merckx on towards his fourth overall win, and in 1967 watched Raymond Poulidor miss the yellow jersey in the first prologue the Tour ever held.

The Route

The Race

The 193 km from Vannes to Angers cross the flat country between the Gulf of Morbihan and Anjou. The route is largely sheltered from the wind, which leaves the day to the sprint teams rather than anyone hoping to split the bunch.

Two moments matter. A long straight stretch as the race enters the final 50 km could inspire some tactical moves, and the finale winds along wide roads before the line rises on a false flat. A sprinter who goes too early on that drag will be passed before the line.

Stuey's Thoughts

“Consistency, and the ability to deliver on the decisive days.”

This is a race in which a rider and their team will need both consistency and the ability to deliver on the decisive days.

Experience This Stage

Start the day in Vannes, the walled town on the Gulf of Morbihan that has hosted the Tour 12 times before. Its riders are part of the story, from Robert Asse, who rode ten Tours after being badly wounded in the First World War, to Jordan Jegat, top ten overall in 2025 and 2026.

In Angers, find a place in the last few hundred metres where the road rises. That false flat is where the sprint is won or lost, and you will see the lead outs break apart right in front of you.

Key Points

  • Start in Vannes on the Gulf of Morbihan
  • Long straight stretch entering the final 50 km
  • Finish on a rising false flat in Angers

The 2027 tours will be released shortly
