The stage leaves Annecy and opens with the Col du Plan du Salève, 9.6 km at 5.4%, before the much steeper Montée de Brison, 5 km at 10.2%. The race then crosses the finish line in Sallanches for the first time and heads into a sequence of short, hard climbs: the Côte de Domancy, 2.5 km at 9.4%, the Montée du Bettex, 5.5 km at 8%, and the Côte du Plateau d'Assy, 5.1 km at 7.5%.
Christian Prudhomme describes it as a day for the Tour's champions to take inspiration from Hinault and fight for both the stage and the yellow jersey. The second ascent of Domancy, close to the finish, is where that fight is likely to be settled.
With no long valley roads to recover on and steep ramps stacked one after another, expect the group of favourites to be small by the final climb and the attacks to start well before it.
