Why This Stage Matters

The final stage is the Tour's celebration and its last fight. The yellow jersey rides in at the front, the champagne comes out, and then the racing starts.

Montmartre has changed the day. Since the Butte came into the finale, the cobbled specialists have beaten the sprinters, and three ascents of Rue Lepic mean a sprint team has to survive the climb before it can set up the bunch.

The Route

The Race

The stage starts from the leisure park at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, home of the velodrome that serves as headquarters of the French Cycling Federation. The opening kilometres through the Yvelines are a procession.

In Paris the race turns serious. The Côte de la Butte Montmartre, 1 km at 6.5% up Rue Lepic, comes three times, and the riders cross the line on the Champs-Élysées seven times in all. Expect attacks on the Butte, a chase on the cobbles of the Champs and a final bouquet fought out between the Classics riders and the sprinters.

Stuey's Thoughts

“For the sprinters, this is the one they really want to win.”

The final stage returns to the traditional Paris finish on the Champs-Élysées, with the spectacular climbs of Montmartre once again adding an extra dimension to the finale. For the sprinters, this is the one they really want to win. For the overall contenders, it is the culmination of three exhausting weeks of racing. After three weeks of sacrifice, teamwork and extraordinary athletic performances, the Tour will crown another champion.

Experience This Stage

Rue Lepic is the place to be. The street is steep, the crowd is deep, and with three passages you see the race three times. Get there early.

On the Champs-Élysées the riders pass seven times before the sprint and the podium, with the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the avenue. If you ride, visit the velodrome at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines the day before: it has hosted World Championships and the Olympic Games.

Key Climbs

  • Côte de la Butte Montmartre, 1 km at 6.5%, climbed three times
