The Race of the Falling Leaves

By October, everyone is empty.

That is the race. Eight months are in the legs, the light goes early, and the course climbs anyway. Nobody wins Lombardia on form. They win it on what is left.

The road runs above Lake Como for most of the afternoon. Chestnut woods. Water through the trees. Villages that have watched this race since 1905 and treat it as theirs.

It is the quietest of the five Monuments to attend and the most beautiful. That is an unusual pair of things to be true at once.

Watch the Monument on the Saturday. Ride the Ghisallo on the Sunday. Most people who come once do both.

What Makes This One Different

Three things carry this race, and none of them are the finish.

The Madonna del Ghisallo. A chapel at the summit with a museum of bicycles inside it, jerseys on the walls and a flame that has burned for the sport since 1949. Riders stop here in training. So does everybody else.

The Muro di Sormano. A wall with a road painted on it. The gradients on the steepest ramps reach the mid twenties and the surface carries the numbers in white paint, so you can read exactly how much worse it is about to get.

October light on the lake. The last race of the season, run when the summer crowds have gone and the water has turned the colour it only turns in autumn.

The Monument in Numbers

The oldest race on the autumn calendar, and the only Monument that closes a season rather than opens one.

It has been run since 1905, which makes it older than Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. Only Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Paris-Roubaix have been going longer.

The course alternates direction between Como and Bergamo, so the finish town changes year to year. The Ghisallo does not.
