Why this stage matters
The Corkscrew decides Thursday.
Corkscrew Road at Montacute is 2.4 km at 9.7% average, with ramps to 16.2%. The race climbs it at 142.3 km and again at 160.4 km, and the finish comes about five kilometres after the second time over the top. Riders who want the overall have to be at the front both times.
Before that, Mount Lofty twice, a longer and steadier climb at 4.4 km and 4.0% average, at 24 km and 84.3 km. Between them sit two intermediate sprints on Onkaparinga Valley Road in Woodside, at 50.4 km and 110.7 km.
It is the last stage the men race alone. From Friday the women race the same roads on the same day.
Watching Stage 3
Mount Lofty gives you two passes early. The Corkscrew gives you the race at its hardest, late. With 18 km between the two ascents, you can stay on the climb and see both.
This is the first race day of the Mummu Tour Down Under journey. The group rides from the Pullman Adelaide to Mount Lofty to watch the race pass twice, then on to Campbelltown for the finishing laps and the finish, and rides back to the hotel. Not riding? The van takes you to the same two viewing points.
