Why this stage matters
Three times up Checker Hill on the first day of the season.
That is the stage in one line. The overall contenders cannot sit back and wait for Willunga. Anyone who loses contact on the third ascent starts the week chasing time, with five more race days to win it back.
Before the hills, the race goes somewhere it has never been. North from Henley Beach to Port Adelaide and across the Birkenhead Bridge, then through Golden Grove, with intermediate sprints in Williamstown at 70.7 km and Lobethal at 105.4 km.
Tuesday is a men's stage. The women's race starts on Friday at Glenelg, and from then on both pelotons race the same roads on the same day.
Watching Stage 1
Checker Hill is the place to be. The race comes past three times, so you see the stage change shape without moving. Gumeracha gives you the finish on Albert Street, expected around 2:36pm.
The Mummu Tour Down Under journey starts on Wednesday 20 January. Add a pre night at the Pullman Adelaide when you book and you are in town for Checker Hill on Tuesday, before the hosted week begins.
