The Route
Stage 1 runs 172 km from Trieste back to Trieste with 2,400 metres of climbing. The race heads out through Redipuglia, then climbs onto the Karst plateau and through Slovenia past Lipica, topping out at around 500 metres before dropping back to the coast.
The finish is decided on three short climbs above Trieste: Hrvatini, Prebeneg and Cattinara Sella di Longera, the last of them 13 km from the line. The organiser rates the stage three out of five, and the first pink jersey of the race goes to the winner.
