Why This Stage Matters

Still early enough for aggressive teams to commit riders. All-rounders can defend or steal time before the Pyrenees intensify.

Stage Highlights

  • ~26 km flat run-in to Pau after final climb.
  • Three short climbs: Côte de Casteide-Doat, Côte de Flancart, Côte de Baleix.
  • Vic-en-Bigorre at ~45 km from finish

The Route

158 km with about 1,900 m of climbing across the foothills. Rolling terrain, fast descents, and no single decisive climb.

How the Race Is Likely to Be Ridden

Early in the race,, from the roadside, you’ll usually see varied speeds as riders tackle the undulating terrain. Breakaways may form, and gaps could appear in the peloton.

Expert Insight

A flat sprint day can be the sketchiest day of the week.

This is the sprinters’ first proper target, and the sprint teams will ride like they’ve been caged all week. Narrow rural roads and fast leadouts make positioning more valuable than raw speed. When trains clash, the gaps vanish and riders start making decisions they’d never make on fresh legs. If you’re not already near the front when it lights up, you’ll be sprinting for damage control.

Practical Information

Breakaways are likely. Pick a hilltop to watch cooperation (or lack of it), then move toward Pau only if you have pre-booked transport. Weather can swing quickly between foothills and valley.
